Friedberg, May 24th, 2023: The Spiel des Jahres jury announced their nominations for Kinderspiel, Kennerspiel and Spiel des Jahres on Monday afternoon, in addition to an extended list of recommended titles. Pegasus Spiele is delighted that Dorfromantik – The Board Game by Michael Palm and Lukas Zach was nominated for Spiel des Jahres 2023, and KuZOOkA by Leo Colovini was recommended for the same category.

For the eighth year in a row, at least one game by Pegasus Spiele has been nominated in the categories Kinderspiel (children’s game), Kennerspiel (core game) and Spiel des Jahres (Game of the Year). Pegasus Spiele is delighted and proud that Dorfromantik – The Board Game has been nominated for Spiel des Jahres 2023. The jury will announce the winner of the world's most prestigious jury prize for board games on July 16th in Berlin. Then it will be certain whether Dorfromantik – The Board Game will follow in the footsteps of Spiel des Jahres 2021 MicroMacro: Crime City (with Pegasus Spiele partner Edition Spielwiese), Kinderspiel des Jahres 2021 Dragomino, and Kennerspiel des Jahres 2022 Living Forest.

Spiel des Jahres nominee Dorfromantik – The Board Game by Michael Palm and Lukas Zach is a cooperative family game for one to six players ages eight years and older. The board game is an adaptation of the eponymous videogame by Toukana Interactive, which currently has over 22,000 positive recommendations on Steam and has won multiple videogame awards. In Dorfromantik – The Board Game, all players work together to build, using hexagonal tiles, an idyllic landscape that satisfies the wishes of the townspeople. These tasks can be fulfilled through careful placement of forests, wheat fields, village tiles, and more. Points will also be scored by creating the longest railway and stream, enclosing large areas marked by flags, and special buildings. After each play, progress is marked on a campaign sheet, which will eventually lead to the unlocking of new material hidden in five closed boxes. New challenges and clever scoring opportunities invites replays to try out different ways to beat one’s high score.

The Spiel des Jahres jury also recommended the cooperative family game KuZOOkA by Leo Colovini in the category Spiel des Jahres. Two to six players act as animals planning their escape from the zoo, who must communicate their plans nonverbally. Players will provide clues by marking spaces on the game board, attempting to signal to their fellow players exactly which objects, represented by cards, are available to help achieve their collective escape. It is not allowed to show one’s cards or to provide any verbal suggestions. If the group can collect enough of the correct item cards, the animals will break free of the zoo in the final round and win the game. Unique skills for each animal and an included game variant add additional challenges for experienced players.
