Pegasus Spiele publishes Port Royal Big Box
Friedberg, Feb. 01, 2022: A few days ago, Pegasus Spiele published the Port Royal Big Box. The push-your-luck card game by Alexander Pfister, which has been delighting the board game community as well as juries of international game awards since 2014, is now available as a complete box for the first time – including new illustrations, the full base game, all expansion content, and a promo card.
Since 2014, players have set sail with Port Royal from the comfort of their own home, becoming merchants in the Caribbean during the golden age of piracy. To repel dangerous pirate attacks, conduct lucrative business with passing ships and gain points by fulfilling expedition requests, two to five players hire a crew in the base game Port Royal. On a player’s turn they’ll flip cards to discover the opportunities at the harbor, revealing four card types: Professions, Ships, Expeditions, and Tax Increases. After each card flip, the player must choose to stop or push their luck and flip another card. More cards could lead to more opportunities. But, however, if a color is drawn that is already displayed and the Profession cards of the active person do not show enough cutlasses to repel the ship, the round ends right away and all the revealed cards are discarded. Players have to watch out for the right moment to secure the most lucrative trade and/or the most helpful crew.
Additionally, the newly illustrated Port Royal Big Box includes two expansions: Just One More Contract and The Adventure Begins, which add a solo mode to the family game for ages 8 and up. The Profession and Ship cards from Just One More Contract can be combined with the base game. The new element of the Contracts can be played as a competitive variant, providing an additional source of influence points to players, or as a cooperative variant with players working together to complete as many Contracts as they can before time runs out. The Adventure Begins also offers a new mode of gameplay as players experience a story with five successive chapters. This expansion can be played competitively, cooperatively or in a solo mode, too. All players choose one of five characters to face the events and new challenges in Port Royal.
Also included in the Big Box, Port Royal Make Sail!, is a quick and simple variant for two to four sailors, which is perfect for travelling or for a faster game. Numerous cards from this variant can also be integrated into the base game. The Gambler promo card adds more variety as it enables the active player to draw four cards at a time. If no ship color doubles, the player can then take one additional card from the harbor display.
The Port Royal Big Box offers many hours of fun for fans as well as new players of Port Royal. The atmospheric new illustrations radiate the pirate theme, and the intuitive principle and short rounds invite players to play multiple games in a row and challenge their luck again and again.
