Memoarrr! – Beach Edition and more board game recommendations by Pegasus Spiele for the summer

Friedberg, June 6, 2023: When spending time with family or friends, hanging out at the beach or on the balcony – if you’re searching for board games perfect for the summer heat, you’ll find a huge selection in the Pegasus Spiele catalog. Whether a classic title or the brand new Memoarrr! – Beach Edition, there are games just made for beautiful days.

In Germany, summer holidays have begun. Families and friends preparing to visit the beach are in luck: with its waterproof materials and practical string net, Memoarrr! – Beach Edition is the perfect game to pack with your towels and sunscreen! This new edition of the award-winning Memoarrr! (Deutscher Kinderspielepreis 2018 and a Spiel des Jahres recommendation in 2018) is also convenient for the pool, the lake, and even your backyard.

This family game by Carlo Bortolini challenges two to four players aged six years and older to use their memory to escape an island threatened by an erupting volcano. The active player reveals one of 25 secret location cards to discover an image of an animal in a landscape. If either the animal or the depicted landscape match with the previously revealed card, both locations are connected. You have successfully taken one step forward on the path to freedom! If the cards do not match, you are eliminated from the current round. When only a single player remains, they retrieve one of Captain Goldfish’s treasure chests with precious rubies hidden inside. Then, without moving any tiles, all face-up cards are flipped face-down and a new round begins. A good memory will be essential to win the game! Memoarrr! – Beach Edition is a quick game that plays in ten to twenty minutes, and when you’re ready for a challenge, use the included expert rules where each animal has a different special ability.

Port Royal Big Box

Simple rules and frigates full of pirate fun await in Port Royal Big Box, a game for two to five players aged eight years and older. During the Golden Age of Piracy, you will recruit a crew, build your influence, and join in lucrative expeditions in the Caribbean. This Big Box edition of the classic push-your-luck card game by Alexander Pfister includes multiple game variants: original Port Royal, Port Royal – Make Sail!, Just One More Contract with both co-op and competitive modes, multiple solo modes, a multi-chapter narrative campaign The Adventure Begins, and a promo card.

The abstract placement game FYFE (Edition Spielwiese) by Kosch is set at the beach as well. Two to five players aged ten years and older must choose, every round, which wooden tokens they would like to place in which spot on the board, and how they would like to score. If there isn´t a scoring board already pointing from the edge of the board to the token just placed (vertically, horizontally or from one of the two diagonals at the top of the board), one must be placed immediately. If placing a tile completes the scoring board, it is turned over and the player will earn points. Another game by Edition Spielwiese that is easy to explain and quick to play is Animotion, a family game that makes a connection between animals and emotions. Five to eight players eight years and older will take turns to pantomime an animal feeling a specific emotion, for example, a happy goldfish, while the other players must guess which animal and emotion are being presented. There are 102 emotions and animals in the game, but you will choose from a selection of six cards each round. The game is designed by Bruno Faidutti and Nathalie Grandperrin.

For large groups and small crowds, Werewolves is a perfect fit; it can be played with six to 24 players. When combined with the expansion Werewolves – Night of the Vampires, you can host massive games with up to 48 players! In Werewolves, each night ends with a villager being killed by the claws or fangs of the monsters who stalk the village. The goal of the monster players is to appear innocent so as not to draw the suspicions of the locals. The villagers must bravely face the threats that surround them and unmask the hidden monsters before it’s too late. Some villager roles, such as the Healer and the Witch, have special abilities that can be used to the townspeople’s benefit during the game. Another family game classic is Bookworm - The Card Game by Michael Palm and Lukas Zach. Two to eight players aged 8 years and older attempt to come up with words regarding a specific theme – but the words must start with the letter on that player’s card. At only 120 cards, the game’s small size makes it just right for day trips, plus it plays quickly in ten to thirty minutes.
